Accessibility

What the theme does so everyone can shop, and the five things you do: alt text, readable colors, clear links, captions, and careful motion.

About one in four adults lives with a disability. An accessible shop lets them buy from you, and helps everyone else too.

What the theme does

  • Keyboard: every menu, drawer, slider, quiz and popup works with the keyboard alone, with a visible outline on the focused element and a "Skip to content" link.
  • Screen readers: buttons, icons and controls have spoken labels in all six theme languages.
  • Motion: visitors who turn on "reduce motion" on their device get still versions of every effect: no autoplaying films, parallax or moving text.
  • Popups and drawers keep focus inside while open and close with the Escape key.

What you do

  1. Describe your pictures. Add alt text to every product and section picture: what it shows, in a sentence. Leave it empty only for pictures that are pure decoration.

  2. Keep text readable. If you change colors, keep enough contrast between text and background. See Text is hard to read.

  3. Write clear links and buttons. "Shop serums" says where it goes; "Click here" does not.

  4. Caption films with speech. If a film has spoken words that matter, add captions, or say the same thing in text nearby.

  5. Do not rely on color alone. If a shade or a sale is shown by color, say it in words too.

Laws differ by country

Accessibility laws apply to online shops in many places (the ADA in the United States, the European Accessibility Act in the EU). The theme gives you a strong base; your content and any apps you add matter too.
