Updates bring fixes, new sections and support for new Shopify features. They are free for as long as you use the theme.
How to know an update is out
In Online StoreThemes, Shopify shows a notice on your theme when a new version is available. Every version and what it changes is listed in the changelog.
Update safely
In Online StoreThemes, select Update on the notice (or ... > Check for update).
Shopify adds the new version to your theme library as a copy. Your live theme is not touched.
Shopify carries your theme settings, sections and their content across to the copy.
Select Preview on the copy and check your home page, a product, a collection and the cart, on a phone and a computer.
When everything looks right, select Publish. Keep the old version in your library for a few weeks, in case you need to go back.
If you or a developer edited the theme's files, those edits are not copied to the update. Make them again on the copy before publishing, from your list of changes. Apps and custom code explains how to keep that list, and how the Custom Liquid section avoids the problem.
Do I have to update?
No. Your version keeps working. We recommend updating within a few months, because support answers questions on the latest version, and Shopify changes over time.
Go back to the previous version
In Online StoreThemes, find the old version in your library and select Publish. Nothing is lost: settings and content stay with each copy.
